OG Lao Gan Ma

An old lady starts her business in 1980s after her friends ask her to start factory to produce chilli crisp oil. The brand is Lao Gan ma, the celebrated brand in China, but not much in USA. Momofuku and Fly By Jing are very popular in USA. So I decided to try all three.

When First time I tried Momofuku, I was blown away by the taste of it. I thought I discovered something new and exciting.

Later after few months, I was just browsing the Chinese Isle in farmers market and I was a Chilli crisp oil in one third the price of Momofuku, that is Lao Gan Ma. I decided to try it.

Later after a week or so, I tried Lao Gan Ma on Taco, on Burger, on Pad Thai, and wallah! I forgot Momofuku, it became totally optional for me, the small bottle that is so costly at 12 bucks. The savoriness of mostly plain chilli crisps clearly dominated by miles, to the complex taste profile of Momofuku. Here is the deal, when I put momofuku chilli oil on anything it alters the taste a little, blends into the food taste well, I liked it. But with Lao Gan ma, when I put on almost anything, the savoriness of it, completely dominated the foods taste. That is something. Out of both, Lao Gan Ma is super savoury. It can make almost anything eatable, at the third price of Momofuku.

I decided to check the history of Lao Gan Ma. And wallah!. Its Chines OG, probably very very respected brand. The old lady came up with this chili crips, and she used to feed the children from income of her restaurant. And someday her friends asked her to start factory, and that became for the last 40 years, the household brand, OG Lao Gan Ma.

I recommend highly Lao Gan Ma Chili Crisp Oil, as compared to Momofuku and Fly By Jing. I believe both of those new brands are the creation of competition, and margins. But after all I discovered, OG is OG for a reason. 10/10. Btw Lao Gan Ma means Old Godmother, and she is a Billionaire.
